Melancthon spent his youth in Adrian. He was a student at the time of his enlistment. Melancthon did not enlist with regiment in June 1861 perhaps because he was too young at 16. He waited until February of 1862

It seems through some political influence 17 year Melancthon was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant which resulted in a great deal of dissatisfaction among the other officers of Regiment. Most likely because he had not payed his dues.

Melancthon was in the hospital July 7, 1862 to July 9, 1862 at Harrison Landing, right after the battle of Malvern Hill. At that time his rank was listed as a private, but this may have been a mistake, because he was discharged upon an order of tender of resignation per General Order 294 Army of the Potomac, Oct. 23, 1862. He went back to Adrian and reenlisted on August 3, 1864 in the reorganized 4th Michigan. He again returned with this regiment and was mustered out on February 11, 1866.

Melancthon was married for the first time on Nov. 9 1868, to Annie E. Knapp. Annie died on May 21, 1869 at the age of 21. His best man at the time was Richard P. Hamm who had been a First Lieutenant in the Old 4th Michigan. Melancthon's occupation at the time of his first marriage was Real Estate Agent. In 1872 he moved from Adrian, Michigan to Cleveland, Ohio.

He remarried to Frankie E. Miller on May 22,1874. Melancthon and Frankie had two children, both boys. They were Alfred H., born on Aug 11, 1876, and Robert P., born Dec. 28 1880.

He did receive a pension after the war on Nov. 8, 1905. He received $10 per month for rheumatism and varicose veins. Melancthon Millard died January 10, 1917.
